How Cambridge Commodities Digitised Their Factory Using QualityApp

Cambridge Commodities is the leading supplier of nutritional ingredients and product solutions to the sports nutrition, food & beverage, animal nutrition, and health & wellbeing industries.

In 2024, Cambridge Commodities partnered with QualityApp to digitise its production operations.

The Challenge

The initial challenge was to digitise Cambridge Commodities' high-care packing process, a complex, multi-step workflow requiring strict traceability and precise execution across teams.

Before digitisation, workflows were entirely paper-based. While reliable, this system slowed issue detection, introduced variability in record-keeping, and made audit preparation time-consuming. The team recognised these constraints and sought ways to streamline operations while maintaining accuracy and compliance.

Digitisation presented a clear opportunity to improve process control, enhance data integrity, provide real-time visibility, and ensure audit readiness at all times.

"We’d looked at other paperless solutions, but none fit our needs. In a fast-paced, highly regulated environment, we couldn’t change our processes just to go digital. When we first saw QualityApp we recognised how it would fit seamlessly into our business." Jamie Nudds, Head of IT, Cambridge Commodities

The Solution

QualityApp collaborated closely with Cambridge Commodities to map and digitise their operational processes, introducing automation, live reporting, and platform enhancements inspired by the company’s unique workflows.

The digitisation began with the repack process, a complex and compliance-critical workflow. We worked collaboratively to configure this process within the QualityApp platform, creating multi-stage procedures that integrated with custom data sources. We also developed and deployed the new 'Buddy Check' PIN-based question type for peer-reviewed sign-offs.

This provided the team with:

  • Real-time visibility of the status and progress of each repack job
  • Control over buddy checks and supervisor sign-offs, critical for validating process integrity
  • Live dashboards for instant visibility of performance, checks, and escalations
  • Elimination of paperwork, making the operators' jobs significantly easier

Following the initial onboarding, QualityApp’s self-service configurability enabled the team at Cambridge Commodities to quickly build new workflows to manage:

  • Technical checks (including GMP, calibration and hygiene processes)
  • Warehouse checks (including asset registration and tracking, machinery logs and maintenance checks)
  • Physical equipment tracking
  • HS&E compliance
  • Goods-In processes

"Cambridge Commodities demonstrate why off-the-shelf software doesn't work in complex food manufacturing environments. By enabling their teams to build out processes and automate critical steps, they've achieved significant benefits - not only for better compliance, but improved productivity and empowered decision-making with real-time data. It has been fantastic to see them extend the platform into multiple areas, highlighting the flexibility and power of the QualityApp platform."   Matthew Stephens, Founder and CEO, QualityApp

The Results

By digitising production operations with QualityApp's Paperless Factory, Cambridge Commodities has achieved:

  • Reduced manual work through process automation
  • Increased efficiency in critical production workflows
  • Real-time issue management via custom dashboards
  • Greater audit readiness across all operations
  • A scalable model for expansion to new sites

"We started off with a specific problem: how do we get rid of paper from our high-care areas. What we have ended up with is an automated solution built to fit our processes, making our operations more streamlined, our operators' lives easier, and improving our compliance at the same time. As we've identified more processes to digitise, we've easily been able to do this ourselves."  Jamie Nudds, Head of IT, Cambridge Commodities

Supporting Growth

As Cambridge Commodities continues to scale its operations, QualityApp is playing a key role in supporting this growth. The platform has already been successfully deployed at their new facility in the Netherlands, and opportunities for implementing similar solutions in their USA business are being explored.

"It's been a real pleasure to work with Cambridge Commodities - they are a leader in their vertical and have allowed us to continue to push the capabilities of the QualityApp platform with a number of complex operational processes. I know that as their business evolves, QualityApp will continue to enable them to manage it more easily and effectively."   Matthew Stephens, Founder and CEO, QualityApp
